Hirohito Rules Out New ‘Pearl Harbor’

by The United Press

HIROSHIMA, Japan, Dec. 7 –Emperor Hirohito pledged today that Japan never again would pursue policies that might lead to another “Pearl Harbor” as he addressed 40,000 persons at this atom-bombed city on the sixth anniversary of the attack on Hawaii.

In an unprecedented and unexpected speech, the Emperor said the Japanese people “must work to contribute to world peace and rebuild the country.”

He expressed the deepest personal sorrow at the atomic disaster that had befallen Hiroshima, but said Japan faced the future hopefully

Emperor Hirohito stood alone and unattended on a raised openair platform in the center of the atomic bomb. Australian military police aided in controlling the crowds.
